Certifications Worth Getting
Free Certifications
- HubSpot Inbound Sales Certification — Free, 3 hours, universally recognized. Every entry-level sales candidate should have this. It teaches inbound methodology and signals initiative to hiring managers.
- Salesforce Trailhead (Ranger level) — Free, self-paced. If you'll use Salesforce (most companies do), reaching Ranger level shows CRM proficiency. Takes 40-60 hours.
- Google Analytics Certification — Free, 4-6 hours. Useful for understanding how marketing generates leads — makes you a smarter sales rep.
Paid Certifications (Worth It)
- Sandler Sales Certification — $3K-$5K. One of the most respected sales methodologies. Teaches consultative selling that applies to any industry. ROI is high if you apply it.
- MEDDIC/MEDDPICC Training — Varies. The enterprise sales qualification framework. If you're targeting enterprise AE roles, understanding MEDDIC is essential.
- Winning by Design (Revenue Architecture) — $500-$2K. Strong for understanding the full revenue cycle. Good for reps moving into management or RevOps.
Certifications to Skip
- Generic 'Certified Sales Professional' programs from unknown providers — Hiring managers don't recognize them and they're often expensive ($1K+) for minimal value.
- University sales certificates (unless from a top sales program like Northwestern or UT Austin) — Most are expensive and don't carry weight in the industry.
- Vendor-specific certifications you won't use — Don't get certified in Marketo if you sell cybersecurity. Only get tool certs for tools in your stack.
The Truth About Certifications
No certification will get you a job by itself. They're signals — proof that you invested time in learning the craft. For entry-level candidates, one or two certifications (HubSpot + Salesforce Trailhead) can meaningfully improve your resume. For experienced reps, certifications matter less — your track record speaks louder. Spend the money on books and coaching instead.
