Technical pre-sales roles — bridge engineering and sales remotely
Loading live jobs...
Remote sales engineer jobs sit at the intersection of technology and selling. Sales engineers (also called solutions engineers, pre-sales engineers, or technical consultants) partner with AEs to provide technical expertise during the sales process — running technical demos, architecting solutions, managing proofs of concept, and addressing technical objections.
Sales engineering is one of the highest-compensated roles in tech that doesn't require people management. You leverage deep technical knowledge to help close deals, but you're not directly carrying a quota. Instead, you're measured on deal support metrics — demos delivered, POCs completed, technical win rates, and customer satisfaction scores.
Compensation for remote sales engineers is excellent. Base salaries: $100K-$160K. OTE: $150K-$280K. Senior and principal SEs at companies like Snowflake, Databricks, and CrowdStrike earn $250K-$400K+. The comp is 70-80% base with 20-30% variable, making it more stable than direct sales while still offering strong upside.
To succeed as a remote sales engineer, you need both technical depth and communication skills. Most SEs have engineering or CS backgrounds, but some come from technical support, consulting, or even self-taught technical backgrounds. The ability to translate complex technology into business value — on a Zoom call, whiteboard session, or technical deep-dive — is what separates great SEs from good ones.
